Electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles are rapidly growing in popularity, leaving many folks with questions about how to charge them and what all the different terms mean. Level 1 Charging Unit
A Level 1 charging unit is the most common, and every EV comes with this charging cable. It will plug into any standard 120V outlet. Level 1 charging often has sufficient power to replenish 2 to 5 miles of range during one hour of charging. Level 1 units are typically found in residential settings. Assuming the driver pays for electricity, an overnight charge costs approximately $1.33. A full charge can vary between $1.20 and $13.00 depending on the size of the EV battery and the electricity rate.

Level 2 Charging Unit
The next level of the charging unit is called Level 2. They operate at 208-240 V and output anywhere from 3 kW to 19 kW of AC power. This unit can recharge your EV at a rate of about 18-28 miles of range per hour. An average EV can be fully charged in 8 hours or less. Most public charging units are Level 2. You can also opt to have an electrician install a Level 2 unit in your home, allowing them to charge their EV overnight fully. Public Level 2 charging unit costs can vary broadly. While some providers offer free charging, many public L2 chargers cost between about $1.00-5.00 per hour. So charging your EV at home using a Level 2 unit will cost $6.00-10.00 for a full charge.

DC Fast Charging Unit
DC Fast Chargers or Direct Connection Chargers are the fastest chargers available, with a maximum output of 350 kW. DC fast charging is designed to fill an EV battery to 80% in 20-40 minutes and 100% in 60-90 minutes. Due to their high cost and extremely high power draw, DC Fast Chargers are intended for commercial or industrial locations rather than residential ones. They are generally located next to interstate highways to enable EV road trips. Using the average rate, a full charge can vary from $10.00 to $30.00, depending on the EV’s battery size.
