When Did the First-Generation Suburban Come Out

Before the debut of the first-generation Suburban in 1935, the Chevrolet Master had already introduced a station wagon body in 1933, utilizing the 1/2-ton truck frame. This model was designed for National Guard and Civilian Conservation Corps units, featuring a body primarily constructed from wood and capable of accommodating up to eight occupants. Chevrolet’s official first-generation Suburban, labeled the “Carryall Suburban,” emerged as a utility vehicle with a station wagon body on a small truck chassis. It offered seating for up to eight people: three in the front, two in the middle, and three in the rear. The cargo area could be accessed through side-hinged rear panel doors or a rear tailgate/lift window. Passenger access was limited to two doors, providing a versatile combination of utility and passenger capacity. The second generation was built in model years 1941, 1942, and 1946. It was also produced during World War II as a military transport vehicle.

Third-Fourth Generation Suburban

The third-generation Suburban debuted in 1946, built on the Chevrolet Advance Design series of pickups. A significant addition in 1953 was the availability of the Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission, found in GMC models and Chevrolet Suburbans starting in the 1954 model year. For the 1953 and 1954 model years, Suburbans with rear panel doors were designated as “3106,” while those featuring tailgates were marked as “3116.” The 1952 Suburban provided consumers with either a tailgate or panel doors. Moving on to the fourth generation, Chevrolet trucks underwent updates in engineering and styling. However, these changes were introduced on March 25, 1955, in the middle of the model year. This update marked the start of the GM-designated Chevrolet Task Force/GMC Blue Chip series.

What Was the Cargo Capacity of the Sixth-Generation Suburban

The styling of the 1960–1961 Suburban model year was influenced by late-1950s Chevrolet vehicles featuring prominent oval ports above the grille. A significant enhancement in 1960 was the introduction of an independent front suspension, marking a shift in the Suburban’s handling dynamics. The cab design boasted a distinctive “wrap-around” windshield; buyers could choose between tailgate or panel door rear openings. By 1964, further updates included a flatter windshield and larger front door glass, while the Suburban’s cargo capacity increased to 1,150 pounds. The sixth-generation Suburban debuted alongside the “Action-Line” generation of C/K trucks. In this iteration, the Suburban grew in size compared to its International Travelall rival, moving from a 115-inch to a 127-inch wheelbase. A notable addition was the introduction of a 3⁄4-ton C-20 Suburban, offering increased payload capacity for the first time. Alongside the standard rear-wheel-drive configuration, customers could also opt for the 4×4 K-10/K-20 models, providing enhanced versatility for different driving conditions.

Eighth-Generation Suburban Introduces the Big-Block

In 1973, the Suburban transitioned into the Rounded-Line C/K series, marking the beginning of the seventh generation. Both Chevrolet and GMC divisions adopted the Suburban nameplate during this era. The seventh-generation Suburban departed from its carryall roots, embracing a station wagon–style body with four full passenger doors. To avoid confusion with off-road vehicles, GM categorized the Suburban as a truck-based station wagon rather than a traditional SUV. The eighth-generation Suburban, featuring a base engine of the small-block 5.7-liter V8, continued to evolve. For the 2500 series, an optional big-block 7.4-liter V8 was introduced. The 6.5-liter turbo diesel became an option, available from 1994 on 2500 models and from 1995 to 1999 on all models. Although rare in the 1500 series, 1500 Suburbans with the 6.5-liter turbo diesel were based on the 2500 series, sharing key mechanical components such as the frame, 14-bolt axle, and eight-bolt wheels equipped with LT-rated tires. This era marked a significant shift in the Suburban’s design and engine options.
