Discover Chevy’s Dynamic Fuel Management Technology

A few years ago, General Motors engineers created a new engine technology called Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM). This was created to be an improvement over Active Fuel Management (AFM). DFM is an engine feature that shuts down some of the cylinders to improve efficiency when the full engine power is not needed.
Chevrolet uses DFM in some of its V8 engine options. This feature gives drivers the V8 power they need, when towing and hauling, and shuts off some of the cylinders under normal, low stress driving conditions. If more power is needed, such as a quick acceleration, the cylinders are reactivated seamlessly.
The Dynamic Fuel Management system is advanced technology that continuously monitors the vehicle. As the driver presses the accelerator, the system is constantly calculating how much power and how many cylinders are needed to respond to the driver’s needs. DFM makes these calculations about 80 times every second.
This advanced engineering technology allows V8 engines to operate in 17 various cylinder patterns. This is a dramatic improvement over AFM, which only had two operating modes: four cylinders and eight cylinders.
“The increased variability of Dynamic Fuel Management means the engine will operate more often with a reduced number of cylinders, which saves fuel across the board,” said Jordan Lee, chief engineer of GM Small Block engines.
